BCG botches effort to take on the McKinsey Quarterly

BCG has finally decided to launch a credible response to the McKinsey Quarterly, although very late and what seems to a lukewarm effort.

BCG Perspectives although certainly nicely designed, is a missed opportunity by BCG to reinvent the transfer of knowledge from consulting firms. The only thing different about this site is that it was written by BCG consultants. The fact that McKinsey’s head of knowledge management went to BCG, made us believe BCG would try to do something different. They have rather settled for simply being the BCG version of MQ.

Surprisingly, while MQ removed the pay wall and opened the site to everyone, BCG is limiting access to the site. It is not even clear who can receive access since they simply have a cryptic email address to ask for access. Hopefully, they will not add a pay wall because MQ will then easily win the war of influence.

The help section is, well, no help at all. 80% of the questions cater to BCG employees and alumni. Why create a public facing site which caters predominantly to employees and alumni? Surely an intranet would have been better?

You can also forget about contacting them. The online contact form never loads completely. Although it looks good on the surface, BCG Perspectives appears to be a side project which is not helping BCG’s image. This could easily have been a more enjoyable site to use.

Let’s hope these are all the typically glitches of launching a new site and will be ironed out soon.

  2. I requested a log-in for BCG Perspectives last week, and found the response from their team to be very prompt. The process is as follows:

    1) Send them an e-mail requesting access to the site.
    2) They will e-mail you back asking for your country of residence, and you will be able to log in with your e-mail address once they create a profile for you.

It took about 2 business days from my first e-mail, to having access to all content on the site. Some of the articles are quite interesting, and I would highly recommend it!
