Since June 2011 we have run several corporate training sessions worldwide. Here we teach people to be consultants. In our other services, we teach people to be hired as consultants. There is a world of difference.
To get an offer from BBM, you need to pass cases. To do the work of BBM, you need to well…do the work. That is much tougher, but so much fun.
Before we go on, let’s give some basic information to outline the definition of “corporate training”:
- We are hired by a full-time employee of an organization to help them with their careers.
- We DO NOT do group sessions. At the end of our sessions we expect clients to actually be able to do the work. This cannot be taught via group sessions. It requires one-on-one coaching.
- They are usually business analysts, internal consultants, strategy executives, financial planners etc.
- We work directly for them and with them, and will not enter into a relationship with their employers. In fact, most clients would prefer to just show a dramatic improvement rather than having everyone know how they improved.
- Each client receives full access to the template store and we tailor a bespoke program to help them with their careers
- Clients continue to have access to the template store for 2 years.
- Clients can call on us for any advice and guidance.
- We spend between 12 to 20 hours teaching them how to work like consultants.
- To better understand what we do, here is an example from a senior business analyst at an American Fortune 100 company who hired us to “bring up to speed and beat his Ivy league peers.”
- He had an IT background from India and completed his MBA at Duke.
- He had been in the US since 2001 and struggled to adjust to the culture.
- He worked in the business planning department at a defense company – for just 3 months. He had been appointed to lead an effort to analyze and select a new Asian market to build a manufacturing facility.
- He had 4 months to accomplish this. We showed him how to do it in 3 months!
- We taught him the following:
- How to use project charters, time lines, flash charts and project logic charts to structure and run the project.
- How to build a project room to manage the team
- How to on-board and manage his project team.
- How to manage the project, meetings and coach and guide employees.
- How to develop hypotheses, decision trees and build these into story boarded power-points to communicate effectively to his managers.
- How to build models and conduct analyses which answers the key question in the project.
- How to communicate the findings and bring the executives to the point where they understand the findings, accept them and implement them.
- We taught him how to storyboard, pre-present and build allies before his presentation.
- We conducted this training over about 14 hours via video conference and even met him on the day before his final board presentation. Moreover, we had numerous discussions with him to provide guidance and input.
- The result was a very successful project, and recommendation, which was implemented by the client.
- Crucially, the client broke out of his “IT mold” and is now a manager in the strategy department.
