An innovative way to network from a student at one of the top-ten US business schools

CampusConsultant is a business student at one of the top ten schools in the United States. In the posts which follow, he will share his experiences of getting into BBM, and fixing some gaps in his application.

So you’re already a top candidate in the fact that you’ve attended all of BBM’s info sessions, spoken with scores of consultants, gotten a few business cards, and maybe have had a phone call or two. While this is a great step in the networking process, there is still something missing. Think about it from the consultant’s perspective—while they certainly will be able to judge if you pass the airport test, it is impossible to assess your analytic and consulting skill through a few brief conversations. To take the next step in getting your personality and ability across to the top firms, enter what I call Client-Side Networking. Read more

Greatest management consulting Guru you probably never heard of!

I was asked this question twenty minutes ago during a conference call with a university. Everyone has heard of Monitor’s Michael Porter, BCG’s George Stalk and Michael Silverstein, or even Bain’s Darrell Rigby. Read more

Unsung Icon of Management Consulting…Booz & Co.

In the world of management consulting a few firms gain the majority of attention. They suck the oxygen out of the media placement leaving little room for some other giants to get their fair play. Beyond BBM, a few firms stand out which deserve far greater attention than they now receive, far greater eminence than their brands have, and far greater recognition for their dominance in selected fields. AT Kearney is a star in the operations consulting space. Roland Berger is the fast-rising general consulting firm. And then there is Booz & Company. Read more

BBM is the new MBB

Yes, it is not a mistake on our website, books, presentations etc. When your managing partner founds his own consulting firm WHILE he is managing partner and takes work from his primary employer, we believe there is a problem with the culture.

That is what Rajat Gupta did.

Hence our use of BBM – BCG, Bain & McKinsey. In that order, which they rightfully deserve to be.

Resume and Interview Tips from Oliver Wyman

Max (not his real name) is an aspiring consultant who is looking to secure an analyst role with one of the top firms for the upcoming recruitment cycle in September 2011. His interest in management consulting was sparked by a failed McKinsey interview last year. In this series of blogs, he will be sharing his background, case preparation process, useful resources, and any breakthroughs or setbacks that he experiences.

I would like to take a quick break from my series of posts regarding case preparation, and share some information which I acquired during an Oliver Wyman (OW) information session a few weeks ago. An OW partner, who is an alumnus of my university, came to campus to talk about opportunities at OW, as well as resume/interview tips. Read more

Which Consulting Firms are Hiring & Where (May 2011 Edition)

We now work with over 50 candidates around the world in various stages of interviews. This gives us a very unique view of which consulting firms are hiring and where, based on feedback provided by these firms to our candidates. We will compile this list monthly. The results are provided by country. Note that for the US & Germany, it is best to contact city offices since hiring needs differ by office. For example, the McKinsey Cleveland office may not be hiring although Miami is hiring. Read more

Will your resume annoy consultants?

Before you even think about sending off that dazzling 3 page essay, or the one your girlfriend in graphic design threw together, use our guideline to analyze your resume. Our guideline is based on that used by the Columbia Graduate School of Business. We think it is superior to anything used by any other business school, and most closely points out the formatting items which annoy consultants!

This is just a formatting guide. Make sure you show leadership, analytical skills, creativity, initiative and intellect in the content. Read more

The True Gate Keepers to BCG, Bain & McKinsey

Chris (not his real name) was a brilliant engineering graduate of Cornell with a Yale MBA to complete the pair up. His impress resume included stints in Goldman Sachs’ (not the real investment bank) proprietary trading desk, as well as a leadership profile which made him a likely candidate to get called in for interviews. He, in fact, networked quite aggressively to get his BCG and Bain interviews, and was well prepared by the time he arrived for the first interview. Chris apparently aced his interviews and the interviewer told him he “would be surprised” if Chris was not called back for the second round. Read more
