Stern MBA on practice with ex-McKinsey partners

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? Yes. I enjoyed casing practice under pressure compared to the relatively easier experience when case practicing with fellow MBA students. Did the program meet your expectations? If yes, how? Yes. It was extremely useful to get information from a senior person in consulting industry vs. getting it from consultants with 1 or 2 years of experience, or reading it on the internet. Michael was very supportive throughout the recruiting process and his interpretation of the interview results and feedback was correct, allowing me to continue on the job seeking path and finally succeed. What was the most important learning’s from the program? Structuring cases, brainstorming and estimation cases - these 3 concepts I couldn't get out of my own preparation even though I have purchased [Redacted] program from [Redacted] and done over 100 cases with fellow MBA students and junior consultants. Do you feel the program provided an advantage for you versus your own/other preparation? If so, in what way? Yes. Feedback on my case practice performance was much more critical and to the point vs. what I was getting from my regular casing partners. Support and feedback provided throughout the process…

Scientist on networking, MECE, 80/20 and structure

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? I enjoy learning; I enjoy being coached; I enjoy being challenged to grow; the program has done all of these. I have also enjoyed building a coaching relationship with Michael, and watching my own progress, from the resume rewrite to case interview training and networking success. Regardless of the outcome, the program has been invaluable in shaping how I present and communicate myself, with immediately tangible and life-long professional & personal benefits — therefore the program is enjoyable even when I’m discouraged or challenged. I would not have enjoyed the program if my expectations had not been met. Did the program meet your expectations? If yes, how? My expectations were met, but I did not expect an offer at a management consulting firm. I believed the desired result was possible, but remained neutral about my chance for success. This approach allowed me to stay confident even when the outcome is uncertain. This is the same approach I used when applying to the program. While I was not shocked to receive an offer to join the Firmsconsulting program, it was something I wanted personally but did not have enough information to draw conclusions,…

Indian executive on speaking and analyses

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? I thoroughly enjoyed the program. Although I have substantial industry experience, the program forced me to look at aspects that I had ignored earlier – communication skills, presentation, storytelling etc. The main learning was the structured manner to approach problems, which I try to apply to my daily work as well. Did the program meet your expectations? If yes, how? Till now, the program is going on well for me. Since my situation is slightly different, being a lateral with major work experience, finding the right opportunity is taking time. So my struggle is far from over. However, I am quite satisfied with the feedback and direction provided by Michael and it has worked for me till now. What was the most important learning’s from the program? The importance of communication and presentation came as an eye opener for me. It is an aspect I ignored throughout my career. Do you feel the program provided an advantage for you versus your own/other preparation? If so, in what way? I could never have reached this level of confidence without the program. It is a definite advantage. Can you recall any memorable moments? In…

Wharton MBA on holistic case coaching approach

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? Yes, the program was very enjoyable and effective for reasons I have disclosed below in no particular order of importance: • My coaches, Kevin and Michael, were very friendly, helpful and willing to step outside the program to provide additional help and suggestions. There was noticeable continuity between Kevin and Michael – it felt like I was talking to the same person each time, but with a different purpose – Michael was the hunter looking for ways to make me improve while Kevin did more consolidation to help me build on what I knew. This was an effective teaming and I have only seen this approach work maybe once before, but it can be incredibly effective when done right. Firmsconsulting has found the right formula. • The program was very flexible and helped me learn the basics. That was a big surprise - I did not expect this. I had interviewed during my Wharton MBA internships and was declined by both BCG and McKinsey. I had about 50 cases under my belt, studied all the online material and used many other programs which I found online. It was only in this program…

Undergrad and improving beyond case interviews

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? Yes for many reasons: • The first time I learnt how to properly structure my answers to case questions • I love the idea of Michael sharing his screen and drawing out the issue trees. I grasped the material a lot easier • I felt that Michael made a lot of effort in the training sessions especially when my next interview was confirmed • Extremely knowledgeable in all areas from even consulting companies in particular countries and his perception of them • The perception of “he’s always there for anything I need” be it from how do I improve my communication skills to recommendations on GMAT which isn’t necessarily directly linked to me landing a consulting position • Over delivering … this means a lot to me!!! Did the program meet your expectations? If yes, how? Yes please see answers in question 1 above. What was the most important learning’s from the program? • Importance of confidence in case interviews • Breaking down the problem in a logical way via issue trees • Importance of communicating clearly (practice, practice, practice) Do you feel the program provided an advantage for you versus your…

Female MBA pivots away from BCG to join IBanking

My Michael Moment happened after my first try at MBB. I applied to all three firms and secured interviews at all three, but did not make it past the final round. I was obviously tired and frustrated. Bitter would be a better word since my class mates got in and they were poorly prepared relative to myself - my opinion but I think it is true. Michael’s first response was to brush off the failure and say we needed to regroup for the full-time hiring. I liked that he did not quit and pushed me to fix my development areas over the summer. I am pretty sure if Michael showed any hesitation about my skills, I would have quit at that point. This story does not end with me getting into MBB in September. It is not that kind of happy ending, but it is very happy. Michael taught me not to quit and to think very carefully about what I wanted to achieve. I still worked with Michael but we focused on investment banking and I ended up getting a coveted offer from one of the leading bulge-bracket M&A firms. In the economic environment at the time, that was…

Scientist oncounter-intuitive BCG networking

While responding to the questionnaire for the strategic planning session, I realized there is a story I can share. It's personal, not professional, but perhaps still appropriate: One Sunday, a week before Christmas, I had been chatting with Michael intermittently while attending holiday functions. At one point I was sitting in my car, having left one party, but not yet on the road to the next party. A cold rain was smattering against my windshield as we chatted back and forth. Earlier in our conversation, I compared professional networking with romantic dating. Michael was quick to agree, and our conversation moved on, but this point stuck with me. The thought wouldn't leave my head. I have lived most of my life single, and never had much success romantically, but I have filled my life with unique and rewarding adventures, so I cannot complain. Being alone occasionally bothered me, of course, but it was something I had grown accustomed to. But over the last few years my confidence has grown exponentially - this is one of the reasons I believe I can make the transition to management consulting. Still; I had left my personal life alone, thinking that I would make…

Sports scholarship recipient joins McKinsey

Did you enjoy the program? If yes, how? The coaching program is well designed, clear expectations and milestones were set and Michael was very accommodating to work around my schedule. Michael was very open-minded in accepting me even though I came from a non-target US program but was very thorough in laying out the obstacles I needed to overcome. Did the program meet your expectations? If yes, how? Yes the program exceeded my expectations. I only pursued McKinsey [Redacted] and had worked with a head hunting firm to set up the interview. I found their preparation to be weak and had signed up to FC for case training. The program is very simple to follow and Michael is a clear speaker so it is easy to follow him. The use of a white-screen to see him solve cases was very useful and probably the best part of the program. I was pleased with Michael’s knowledge of the [Redacted] office and his very useful advice in helping me improve my fit answers. This made a big difference to the overall interview since I could provide very good reasons why I had not selected the Ivy Leagues for my studies. What was…

BCG interview prep before training begins

Thank you for asking me to contribute to the changes at FC. I hope my best experiences are useful for the discussions in January. My most memorable moment working with Michael occurred well before I applied to the program. I would post very detailed questions to the Firmsconsulting open podcasts and Michael responded to everyone in great detail. It made me realize that Michael was very committed to teaching everyone about management consulting and took the time to provided useful advice. I always find Michael’s advice to be different from anything on the internet. There is depth, substance and experience behind every answer and I appreciate both his US and non-US experience. That is unusual. I applied to the Firmconsulting program but will only begin my training in a few months. I am sure it will be just as great! We have published the most useful client feedback. Our commitment to confidentiality prevents us from disclosing the identity of our clients and other confidential information, and we may alter details to prevent such disclosure. Some client feedback may be lightly edited for grammar, spelling or prose, though we never alter or remove any information. Clients in our consultants coaching program…
