Firmsconsulting in Review

2016 has ended and as always I send out my thoughts recapping the year and offering advice for clients. If you saw many changes with Firmsconsulting in 2016 brace yourselves for an even bigger, and very different, 2017. 2017 is going to be about major updates to FC Insider. Exclusive and, dare I say, groundbreaking new training programs (not yet revealed) along with some major changes elsewhere. A necessary reward for our most loyal clients: man y whom have been with us since the beginning. Ethics No discussion about future leaders should ever begin without ethics. Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for many clients. Bonuses usually come in, or not. You catch up with family, and friends, and invariably compare your career and life; who got promoted, who went to France for summer, who bought the better home, who can afford to get married, have kids etc. My advice, as hard as this may be to execute, is to never ever compare your true self to the sinfully choreographed images others project of themselves. No one really tells you what is happening in their lives. What seems like someone else's success to you may actually be abject failure. In fact,…

How to recognize an effective consulting case interview coach or practice partner

As many of you know I am a big Rugby union fan. I also watch a lot of football and basketball. So, like many of you, I am a sports guy. I like sports. One of the things you notice in sports is that if you look at the great players today in just about any sport, they rarely go on to become greatest coaches. Rarely! There are obviously exceptions. But those are exceptions that prove this rule. You can see this in Rugby, Cricket, Soccer, Basketball and Baseball. There are a few outstanding players that went on to become good coaches. But the greatest coaches were almost never outstanding players. And that is a fact. You see it a lot in universities as well. Just because someone is an outstanding researcher does not mean at all that they have the skill to be an exceptional teacher. Extraordinary consulting leaders were rarely phenomenal consultants The same can be observed in management consulting. I am thinking of the phenomenal consulting partners. They were truly outstanding. Not just as partners but as leaders of consulting firms. Were they ever outstanding consultants? Dominic Barton wasn’t a phenomenal consultant. He didn't make partner until the third try. Among other issues, there were concerns…

McKinsey BTO vs. McKinsey Strategy

Today let's shatter some of the damaging myths about McKinsey BTO. Firmsconsulting has a particularly high percentage of clients who tend to be Indian, between 30-40 years old, who tend to have executive MBAs or MBAs, work in the tech sector and are looking to move into management consulting. This is one of our most common client profiles. And they tend to ask the same question all the time so we decided to address it in this article, and related podcast. The question is along these lines, “How do I avoid being tagged as a tech person and being placed into McKinsey BTO instead of being hired as generalist. I don’t want to go into McKinsey BTO because I don’t want to be branded as a tech person. I am fed up with that.” I am going to give you the advice I give all these clients. And we obviously will elaborate a little bit more here and if I miss something, post a comment and we will be more than happy to address it. Insight #1: The market values a McKinsey BTO background as much as McKinsey Strategy The first thing I want you to do is, when you meet someone from McKinsey or…

Grooming Emerging Leaders: Lessons from Sveta

The Emerging Leaders Program (formerly called the Emerging Fellows Program) is a scholarship we award where we take people from very disadvantaged communities, with limited chances in life, and we guide them through their studies, even guide them into universities and place them into major consulting firms and other major companies. Graduates of the program have joined McKinsey, BCG, Bain and Morgan Stanley. I don’t want to talk about the part of the program where we help them join consulting firms and other companies. We covered this topic a number of times previously. Today I want to talk about values, obligations and expectations of those selected for the Emerging Leaders Program. The expectations are enormous. It is called Emerging Leaders for a reason, versus the Emerging Upper Middle Class Program. If you read the contract that they sign when they join, its not a big contract but in there it is clearly stated that people who join the Emerging Leaders Program are expected to go back to their communities once a year and become involved in a significant socio-economic endeavor, with the approval of Firmsconsulting. This approval part is important. We take it seriously. I want to talk you through a recent event with Sveta, the…

Case Interviews: EMBAs / Experienced Hires

Follow this unique 110 episode series (see the full list of episodes below), prepared for the Darden EMBA program, to help experienced hires and EMBAs successfully prepare for their McKinsey, BCG and Bain interviews. This is the only case interview training program in the world dedicated to helping experienced hires /  EMBAs, by taking into account their very unique challenges, join elite consulting firms. This is a much needed program. If you are an experienced hire or an EMBA you usually have to rely on the advice that has been developed for MBAs and sometimes PhDs. But as an experienced hire or an EMBA you are typically ignored because that advice is not very useful. [bctt tweet="As an EMBA / Experienced hire, you are a minority. Yet, you are a minority that we care about." username=""] Firmsconsulting devotes significant attention and time to experienced hires / EMBAs. Experienced hires are one of our largest client segments and we design our programs to manage the unique challenges they face: usually part-time degrees, deep industry specialization, choosing roles to secure a green card, difficulties finding a fit in McKinsey/BCG, limited time to prepare, small window to change careers, sponsoring family members back home etc. The majority of our experienced hire clients have…

Career Opportunities for Insiders

We recently ran a pilot whereby we partnered with leading finance, technology and consulting firms by granting them access to recruit graduates of both our Insider program and 1-on-1 case, consulting and executive coaching programs. Only graduates who affirmatively consented in writing to participate in the program had their resumes shared. Part of the pilot included an F500 technology company automatically granting internships to our case interview coaching graduates, in their internal strategy and product divisions. That pilot is completed. It was very successful and we are bringing back the program in the following format. It is only open to Insiders. No additional fees of any kind are required from Insiders to participate in this program. FIRMSconsulting will not be compensated by the participating firms to avoid a conflict of interest and ensure we always place the interests of Insiders first. Should we in future accept compensation from the participating firms, we will post a notice on this page and disclose the nature of compensation received. We are simply offering this service to help Insiders who diligently complete all the training and apply the skills taught. We believe perseverance, diligence, and values in one's education should be rewarded. Insiders who diligently…
